NIELSEN & WINTHER (Danemark)  NIELSEN AND WINTHER AS
Aa Истребитель Aa Fighter 1917  1917

The first flight took place on 21 January 1917, and the plane was tested again in 1918, this time with synchronising gear for its single Madsen machine gun. During 1917, six Type AA aircraft were delivered to the Royal Danish Air Force, however these saw little service and were retired in 1919 due to engine unreliability.
The first, and last Danish fighter aircraft to be conceived and built, the Type AA was of wooden construction, and with a single seat. Armed with two guns and a 90 hp Thulin engine (thanks to a sizeable amount of design help from AB Thulinverken.

NIELSEN AND WINTHER AS
During First World War built Nieuport types under license, and put into small-scale production a biplane of its own design.
Designed and built by Nielsen & Winther A/S, a Copenhagen machine tool manufacturer, possibly with some assistance from the Swedish Thulin concern, the Type Aa single-seat fighter was first flown on 21 January 1917. Of wooden construction, the Type Aa was powered by a 90hp Thulin rotary engine (a copy of the Le Rhone) and was armed with a single 8mm Madsen machine gun mounted on the upper wing and firing above the propeller disc. Ground tests with synchronising equipment took place in 1918, reportedly using a Type Aa with the gun mounted on the side of the fuselage, but there is no evidence that air firing tests took place. Six Type Aa fighters were delivered to the Danish Army during 1917, but these were withdrawn from service in 1919 owing to the unreliability of their engines. Prototypes were completed of a two-seat reconnaissance version, the Type Ab, and a floatequipped version of the single-seater, the Type Ac.

ORLOGSVAERFTET
The Royal Danish Naval Dockyard (Orlogsvaerftet) constructed 12 Hawker Danecocks under license in 1927/1928. A single-seat biplane fighter derived from the Hawker Woodcock, the Danecock was armed with two 7.7 mm Madsen machine-guns. It remained in service until 1937 with the Royal Danish Air Force, which designated it the L.B.II Dankok.

ROYAL ARMY AIRCRAFT FACTORY
Formed in 1914 to undertake aircraft construction and repair work for the Royal Army Flying Corps. Built foreign aircraft under license before Second World War, including the Fokker C.VE reconnaissance biplane, and Gloster Gauntlet and Fokker D.XXI fighters

ROYAL NAVAL DOCKYARD
Built seaplanes and flying-boats for the Danish Navy from 1914, comprising both original designs and license-built types such as Hawker Danecock (Dankok).

SKANDINAVISK AERO INDUSTRI AS
Founded 1937 to build light aircraft. Financed by a large Danish industrial concern; took over aircraft business formerly conducted by Kramme & Zeuthen, builders of KZI light single-seat monoplane. Prefix KZ retained for KZII two-seat trainer, supplied to Danish Air Force; KZIII and VII four-seat cabin monoplanes; KZVIII aerobatic monoplane, and KZX artillery observation type. In mid-1950s turned increasingly to repair and maintenance of military aircraft, and aircraft production had ended by late 1950s

Many nations gave birth to aviation and the pioneers who propelled its stunning successes. To recognize these contributions, we asked the International Council of Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) to have each ICAS country identify its pioneers and present the story of its national achievements in aerospace.
The notable figures profiled here are but a few examples of those who could be considered. If you feel your country or its pioneers are not sufficiently represented and you have the history to share, please contact Sharon Grace.
