as HOAC-Austria, Flugzeugwerk Wiener Neustadt Gesellschaft
mbH after the 1989 management buyout. Diamond Aircraft
Industries Canada is a division (q.v.). Produces the HK 36
Super Dimona motorglider in four versions, but has stopped

Austria (first flown March 1991 as the HOAC LF 2000,
becoming LF2 before DV 20), which is now produced in Canada
as the DA 20 Katana. Latest aircraft is the four-seat DA 40
Katana (first flown 1998
ETRICH
AUSTRIA/GERMANY
Austrian Igo Etrich (1879-1967) experimented
in aeronautics from 1899. After working with engineer
Franz Wels he made a tailless glider with backswept wings
in 1907. This was intended to be powered, and led to the
Etrich Taube monoplane (bird-like, with backswept warping
outer wings and fan-like tail) in 1909-1910. Object was
inherent stability; first flight at Wiener-Neustadt in
November 1909. Small-scale production (Etrich Flieger
Werke) and competitive success followed, in U.K. and other
countries and the type was imitated frequently. Early
Etrich pilots included Hellmuth Hirth. Jointly with his
businessman father, Etrich had a private experimental
establishment at Josefstadt. Etrich A-1 and A-2 monoplanes
served with Austro-Hungarian Army before First World War.
Etrich Fliegerwerke GmbH established at Liebau, Silesia,
in 1912, independent of Motorluftfahrzeug Gesellschaft of
Vienna and Rumpler of Berlin, each of which held a license
for the Taube. Rumpler built the type from 1911-1914, and
other German makers built similar machines, as used by the
German Army before and during the war. First product from
Liebau was a remarkable three-seat cabin monoplane with
wings of variable incidence and camber, and nosewheel
landing gear. In 1914 the company was absorbed by
Brandenburgische Flugzeugwerke (q.v.).
HB-AIRCRAFT INDUSTRIES LUFTFAHRZEUG
AG.
Developed HB-23 Hobbyliner two-seat light
aircraft/motorglider and Scanliner
surveillance/observation/patrol variant, principally
produced in 1980s. Company renamed HB Flugtechnik 1992, but
halted production. Aircraft currently produced by HB

began aircraft manufacture in 1935 after taking
overFlugzeugbau Hopfner (q.v.). Only the Hirtenberger HS- 9
parasol-wing training/touring monoplane was produced. An
open-cockpit tandem two-seater, it had either a 125 hp Siemens
or 120 hp de Havilland Gipsy Major engine, the latter variant
being designated HS-9A.

OBERLERCHNER, JOSEPH
A former manufacturer of sailplanes, Oberlerchner flew a
prototype all-wood two-seat JOB 5 lightplane in 1958. The
developed JOB 15 four-seater, which had
metal/wood/glassfibre construction, entered production in
1961, powered by a Lycoming engine. It remains in service
with Austrian and other European aero clubs, especially as a
glider tug
OEFFAG
Oesterreichische Flugzeug-Fabrik AG was a subcontractor in
the First World War to the German Albatros-Werke (q.v.)

A subsidiary of the German Aviatik company (q.v.), this
manufacturer built Aviatik B.I and B.ll two-seat
reconnaissance aircraft for the Austro-Hungarian Flying
Service and worked on a single-seat scout version of the
Aviatik C.I. This airplane, the D.I. Berg-Scout, was at
first prone to wing failures under load, but eventually ran
to 11 production batches

This company manufactured a series of Phonix single-seat
fighter aircraft powered by Austro-Daimler engines. The Dl and
Dll were flown during First World War by the Austro-Hungarian
Flying Service, a few being fitted with cameras for high-speed
aerial photo-reconnaissance work. Seventeen of the final batch
of 122 Phonix Dlls were completed as improved Dill variants
and transferred to the Swedish Army Air Service after the war.
PINTSCH, JULIUS AG
This engineering company started an aircraft department in
mid-1930s to manufacture Raab Schwalbe II and Tigerschwalbe

planned production of its four-seat twin-engined SGP- 222,
which had first flown May 1959. Plans abandoned by
mid-1960s, though several prototypes built.

ZENTRAL-AVIATIK UND AUTOMOBIL GMBH
This company produced the Aviatik
B.1, one of the earliest purpose-designed combat
aircraft, in 1914. The following year production on a large
scale was initiated by Oesterreichische-Ungarische
Flugzeugfabrik Aviatik (q.v.).
Since some thirty years many
publications, first in the United States, later also in Europe,
described remarkable intellectual contributions of Austrians in
the period from 1867 until 1938. Consequently it became
more widely known, that the so-called 'Vienna 1900' - phenomenon
referred not only to important achievements in music, fine art,
literature and psychology, but also in philosophy, economics or
physics.
However, it is a much less common knowledge, that in this very
period - especially in the first decades of this now ending
century - austrians also played quite a prominent role in the
pioneer phase of rocketry. Whilst only relatively few of
the ideas of these pioneers were realized in their home country,
an important part of today's space applications and concepts can
be traced back to the first blueprint created by these
men.
I hope the following short biographies will help draw the
attention of a wider public to this historic aspect of space
exploration and rocketry. more...
