Royal
New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF)
New Zealand's military aviation began in 1913 when the New
Zealand Army was presented with two Blériot monoplanes by the
United Kingdom. These machines were grounded after a young
woman was given a joyride; on the outbreak of hostilities, the
Bleriots were sent to support British forces in
Mesopotamia.
In the Great War, New Zealand aircrew flew as part of the
British Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service. New
Zealand pilots serving with British forces saw service in all
theatres. Fifteen became aces, the top scorer being Keith
Caldwell with, depending on how counted, more than 24
victories....
AIR PARTS (NZ) LTD.
In 1957 acquired Australasian sales rights for Fletcher FU-
24, and in 1964 acquired manufacturing rights. FU-24 had been
designed initially for top-dressing work in New Zealand, to
which country initial series of 100 was delivered. Several
variants developed, including two turboprop versions. On April
1,1973 the company was amalgamated with Aero Engine Services
Ltd. (see AESL) to form New Zealand Aerospace Industries
Ltd.
BENNETT AVIATION LTD.
This company built and developed a single-engine agricultural
monoplane, designated Bennett P.L.11 Airtruck, designed by
Luigi Pellarini. Somewhat similar to the P.L.7 agricultural
aircraft, designed by Pellarini for the Kingsford Smith
Company in Australia, it flew for the first time on August
2,1960.
DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT OF NEW ZEALAND LTD.
Formed 1939 at Rongotai, Wellington. Produced a small number
of Tiger Moths from 1940. After the war reverted to overhaul
and servicing, and assembled Devons, Fox Moths, and Chipmunks.
FLIGHT ENGINEERS LTD.
Joint company formed by agricultural operator Barr Brothers
and Marine Helicopters Ltd. to maintain own fleets, but also
undertook license-assembly of Transavia PL-12 Airtruk
agricultural aircraft from 1973. T320 version powered by
Continental Tiara engine introduced 1977. Production ended
1980.
NEW ZEALAND AEROSPACE INDUSTRIES LTD.
Aero Engine Services Ltd. and Air Parts (NZ) Ltd. amalgamated
in 1973 to form New Zealand Aerospace Industries. Production
of the Fletcher FU-24 agricultural aircraft and the AESL
Airtrainer CT4 was integrated, and examples were delivered to
Australia, Bangladesh, Iraq, Pakistan, Thailand, and Uruguay.
The Airtrainer CT4 was delivered to the air forces of
Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand, but went out of
production. Company assets were purchased by Pacific Aerospace
Corporation Ltd. (q.v.).

PACIFIC AEROSPACE CORPORATION LTD.
Established 1982, following the purchase of the assets of New
Zealand Aerospace Industries (q.v.). Currently markets the
CT/4E Airtrainer two/three-seat training lightplane (first
flown 1972 in original form, and 1991 in present CT/4E form);
piston-engined FU24-954 Fletcher suited to agricultural,
firefighting, and many other utility roles, or for carrying
six/eight passengers when using optional passenger kit, or two
stretchers and two sitting casualties in an air-ambulance role
(first flown 1954); and CR-750 Cresco turboprop development of
the FU24 (first flown 1979). Company also manufactures
components/assemblies for Airbus and Boeing aircraft.
WAITOMO AIRCRAFT
LTD.
Formerly Bennett Aviation Ltd. (q.v.) of Te Kuiti. Designed
first commercial aircraft built in New Zealand, the Airtruk,
which flew 1960. Small-scale production. Design based on
Luigi Pellarini Transavia Airtruk.
